Surgery of the Breast
What defines a woman?
The Victorian notions of frailty and the feminist movement of the 60s both tried to label the gender with their doctrines, giving us two very different images of the female soul.
When Mother Teresa and Eva Braun are compared – where is the similarity in their spirit, in their manner?
How could such diametrically divergent creatures possibly be attributed to a single, defining word?
In the most primitive of arguments, there is no space for spirit. The answer lies in pheromones, hormone concentrations; in mammary glands, ducts, invaginations and protrusions of flesh.
Depriving a woman of any of these things, especially those our society dictates as essentially ‘feminine’, combined with the diagnosis of cancer can have devastating effects on a woman’s psyche, self-confidence and body image.
Some women have problems with breast asymmetry (one breast much larger than the other) or have very heavy or pendulous breasts. Very large breasts can cause back ache, neck pain and irritation of the skin beneath the breast. It can be hard to find suitable clothes and comfortable bras, and certain sports can be difficult.
For some women having large breasts can make them very self-conscious. In some cases, profound psychological distress hinders a normal fulfilled life!
