Liposuction is a flexible and varied procedure that aims to create a slimmer and smoother profile for both men and women while improving your appearance and boosting your self-confidence.
Even with a proper diet and exercise, some people may still battle with trouble spots that don’t respond to the effort made toward a healthier lifestyle. Although many people associate liposuction with removing excess fat around the abdomen, this procedure can be performed on other areas of the body as well.
What is body contouring or liposuction?
Suction-assisted lipectomy, or liposuction, is a surgical technique designed to remove body fat from various parts of the body including the face, chin, arms, axilla, abdomen, hips, thighs, knees and ankles.
It consists of removing the layer of fat between the skin and muscle tissue and shaping and contouring what is left behind.
It may involve procedures to:
- Remove extra skin
- Eliminate excess fat
- Reshape or contour the area
NB: Liposuction is not a substitute for losing weight.
Liposuction is a form of body contouring that is used to get rid of fat cells and create a smooth, toned appearance.
How is liposuction performed?
In Mr Fitton’s clinic, liposuction is usually performed under a general anaesthetic and, depending on the individual’s requirements takes between one to two hours to complete.
Using a small specially designed cannula (a hollow tube the diameter of a straw) inserted through small incisions in the skin, fat is gently removed by attaching the cannula to a suction device.
The liposuction procedure is facilitated by using a power-assistance device which improves the efficiency of fat removal. At the beginning of the procedure, a mixture of sterile saline and local anaesthetic is injected into the regions to be treated – this is known as a wet or super-wet technique.
Where can liposuction be used?
People choose to have body contouring to look and feel thinner or to achieve a certain shape. It’s often used on specific areas of the body when diet and exercise aren’t making a difference.
Surgical options can also remove extra skin to make the skin look smoother and younger. Such procedures can help people who have excess skin after significant weight loss. It can also improve loose, saggy or wrinkled skin that occurs with natural ageing.
Body contouring can target most areas of the body. Common areas for liposuction include:
Can I combine liposuction with other procedures?
Liposuction is frequently performed at the same time as other body contouring procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lifts, tummy tucks and lower body lifts.
By combining these procedures under one anaesthetic there can be considerable cost savings with both anaesthesia and the surgery facility.
Risks of Liposuction
As with any operation, there is a risk of infection but it’s exceptionally low.
Irregularity and ridges in the areas treated can occur even when meticulous care is taken at the time of the surgery. By removing the underlying fat, the skin will become lax and saggy. In young patients, this will creep back in a similar way as a pregnant woman’s abdomen shrinks back after birth. However, this is dependent on age and skin type as well as the degree to which the skin has been stretched before the procedure.
Other severe but very rare complications such as pulmonary and fat embolism and pulmonary oedema have been reported after liposuction. You need to balance the risks with the benefits before going ahead with treatment.
