The system of credentialing plastic surgeons
For a number of years concerns have been raised regarding the unregulated nature of certain aspects of aesthetic surgery.
A growing number of individuals, whether they be registered doctors or unregistered practitioners, have been allowed to undertake procedures without the sort of training undertaken by a licensed plastic surgeon.
As a consequence, and following parliamentary rulings, a system of credentialing is been introduced, as set out by the General Medical Council of United Kingdom, and is being implemented through a programme organised by the Royal College of surgeons.
Credentialing is a process which provides formal accreditation of competence (knowledge, skills and performance) in a defined area of practice, at a level that provides confidence that the individual is fit to practice in that area.
Credentialing will provide patients with a degree confidence that their surgeon/practitioner is competent to perform the procedure they are being asked to perform. Furthermore, it provides formal recognition of the surgeon’s capabilities which will further reassure our patients.
